Trigger Files – A Common Model to Initiate File Transfers

Simple workflow to initiate adhoc or on-demand file transfers

Oftentimes we are asked what is the most effective way to initiate a file transfer. Our answer – it depends!

But a common means of initiation is to have some executable process or customer software application prepare a file for transfer – and when that process or application is complete – have that process or application place a file that contains a path to the file that needs to be copied or transferred to another location. That file becomes a “trigger” to initiate a managed file transfer.

The overall process can be extended or customized to suit your needs. For example, often a database lookup is performed against the file name, suffix, or some other file attribute to get the destination information to route the file. The following image shows such a workflow.
